You can’t beat a home made curry. I don’t mean a curry out of a jar but a curry made from the proper spices. Here is a recipe which I think is brilliant and I can recommend that you try it. If you have a slow cooker then great because using a slow cooker really brings out all the flavours and cooking the meat slowly makes it much more tender as well.
The Ingredients are for 4 people:
2 tablespoons of flour
2 tablespoon of curry powder
2 teaspoon of cumin
2 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon of salt
1 chopped onion
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 tablespoon of oil
700g of stewing beef, cubed
1 sliced red pepper
150ml of beef stock
400g tin of chopped tomatoes
A dash of Tabasco sauce
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
2 cooking apples, cored and roughly chopped
25g of sultanas
25g of cashew nuts
How to make the Beef Curry:
Mix the flour, curry powder, cumin, turmeric, ginger and salt.
In a large frying pan, gently fry the onion and garlic in the oil until softened but not brown.
Roll the beef in the seasoned flour and brown on all sides in the pan. Stir in the remaining flour. Add all the remaining ingredients except the nuts. Transfer everything to the slow cooker, including the beef stock, and cook on the low setting for at least 6 hours.
You will find that the beef is really tender and that the flavours are much more intense because everything has been cooked really slowly. You can serve with boiled rice and mango chutney for a fantastic beef curry meal. If you don’t have a slow cooker you can use a casserole dish and leave it in the oven on a very low setting for about 3 to 4 hours.
Before serving stir in the nuts.
Sounds lovely but when do the nuts go in?
Stir in the nuts just before serving !
This is absolutely lovely. Will certainly make it again and pass it on!
Without doubt the easiest and most delicious Curry I’ve had. First time this weekend in the Slow Cooker and it couldn’t have been better….thanks!!!
Lovely Recipe – Tastes great and good for those who dont like it hot! I added a large cinnamon stick a it compliments the apples and raisens so well!
Taz. Thanks for the tip. You can, of course, add extra curry powder if you prefer your curry’s a bit hotter. This beef curry tends to have a bit of an after-kick to it !
This recipe is so good the Mrs has me doing this again for her today! Its a curry and its tasty and ill see if my lil girl Izzey likes it later too! She loves her raisens and so what a way to get her to a eat a curry!
delicious!! I can’t wait to make it again!
Had friends for dinner last night….this curry was delicious, i added a green & red chilli de-seeded and finely chopped to add an extra kick. Thank you for a great recipe
Hi Sue. Thanks for the feedback and am really pleased that you enjoyed the beef curry. David
I’ve done this now a few times for friends, this really is the best Beef Curry ever. Many thanks.
Hi
I have been looking around for a good beef curry. I am going to try this for tonights meal. Its looks a good one. Cant wait.
Thanks
(from an ex Chef)
Now going to cook this a second time for 20 friends !!
how many liters do u think the slow cooker should b? sounds great cant wait to try
Flo. For the beef curry recipe you don’t need the biggest slow cooker. I would say you need a slow cooker that holds about 2.5 litres, but that’s a pure guess. I use a large 3.5 litre slow cooker when I make the beef curry and it only comes to about half way up the container.
thank x
Are you sure it’s only 150 mls of beef stock? That doesn’t seem much. This is my first use of a slow cooker so I’m a bit of a novice!
Hi Caroline. 150mls or 1/4 of a pint. Yes, that’s all you need. If you are making larger quantities, for example if you were making the beef curry for 8 people you will need to double the quantities.
Try the recipe and you will see it works. You can, of course, add more spices if you prefer a hot curry. Enjoy !
Absolutely delicious! Very Proud of my First ever Slow cooker dish! Thankyou!
This is the most delicious curry I’ve ever made. Fact. I’ve got this page bookmarked! I use the cheapest ‘casserole beef’ and several people have asked where I got such tender STEAK from! LOVE IT. Thanks David
PS The cashews didn’t seem to add anything so I leave them out.
Tru…Thanks for those kind words about the beef curry. I’m really pleased so many people enjoy it. It’s a while since I made it myself so I think I’ll make it soon myself again !
David, I would need to put the curry on before going to work. Will it be ok for 8 hours on low?
Hi Neil
Yes, you can put the slow cooker on before you go to work and it will be brilliant when you get home after 8 hours. The beef will be really soft and tender and it will taste great. David
Wow!This is really good!!! I hope this helps, I have some conversions for this receipe. This makes 2 1/2 Liters or 2 1/2 Quarts. Beef: 700 grams = 24 ounces. Beef stock: 150 ml = 5 ounces, 1/4 pint, 2/3 cup. Chopped tomatoes 400 grams tin = 14 ounce can. Sultanas (raisins) 25 grams = 3/4 ounce. I made this for the first time yesterday and tomorrow I will make this again!!!!!
Hello Chef David,
I there a spice I could add to this curry receipe to give it more of a kick? My neighbor hood Indian Restaurant has a Curry Hot/Spicy rating of 1 to 5. I pick 2 my boyfriend picks 4. Add A Diced Jalapeno Pepper??. I’m a novice crock potter and novice cook. This is such a good receipe and easy that I don’t want to just add spices on a wimm and ruin this receipe. Any help would be much appreciated.
Last night I prepared this and put it all into my slow cooker, switched it on this morning and let it cook all day. We had it this evening and it was absolutely delicious. We had it with new potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, sweet potato and green beans. We have enough left for tomorrow.
I added 2 finely chopped green chillis and 2 teaspoons of Chinese 5 Spice.
Made this in the slow cooker, and it went down a storm. A real good ‘old school’ curry.
I’m currently making this curry for the first time, added a chopped chilli for a bit of extra oomph! 2 hours on & its smelling great! Roll on 8pm!!
@Sarah
Yea…the smell as the beef curry cooks is really good. It’s hard not to keep lifting the lid off to get the full aroma ! Hope you enjoy the beef curry tonight…..
I have loads of extra potatoes – can I add these to the recipe? Should I par boil them first and at what point should I add to the slow cooker?
Just made this and thought it was really tasty and also very simple and easy to prepare(and mild enough for my spice averse husband!). Left out the cumin as I’m not a fan and the cashews as we had run out but it was still great, thanks for posting!
@DB
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback. Best wishes, David
Made your beef curry recipe this week in my slow cooker. It was really easy to make and delicious. Will definitely be adding it to our list of favourites. Thank you.
@Anne
Hi Anne. Thanks for your nice comments. Glad you enjoyed the beef curry.
very nice
Hu sounds great but can i use rump steak diced instead of stewing steak? Thanks
Made this curry for my daughters 21st birthday party it went down really well I used skirt beef which was ideal in the slow cooker will def make it again
Made this last nightt for my partner and my sister and partner. They all came back for seconds. It was suprb. Will definitely do again.
Hello David,
on a recent trip back home a friend (Billy Albone ) suggested I try your recipe. It was magnificent, I served it with basmati rice with peas, banana and pineapple, naan on the side. I will certainly do it again. My wife who is canadian and not an afficiando of curry certainly enjoyed it. I have to stop typing now, my perspiration is dripping on my keyboard, yes, I made it a little hotter.
all the best in all you do
Paul
Sounds great , is the cumin seeds or powder?
Hi
It’s cumin powder you use or, of course, cumin seeds crushed. Hope you enjoy the beef curry!
I would like to try your beef curry recipe but for six people, what difference would there be for the amounts of the ingredients
I would like to try your beef curry recipe but for six people, what difference would there be in the amounts of the ingredients
Yes, that’s no problem. Just use the ingredients in the recipe for 4 people and then use half again (50%) of the ingredients to make it for 6 people. Just as if you were making for 8 people you will need to double the ingredients! Hope you enjoy it. I’m making the beef curry recipe tomorrow for 8 people so I will use double the qualntity of ingredients. I often don’t double the amnount of apples if I’m making it for 8 people. I might add maybe an extra cooking apple, depending on how I feel. DavidB
Thoroughly loved this recipe, as did my family when I dished it up. Will definitely put this on my favourites list. Thanks for a great and easy recipe
@Joy Edo
Thanks Joy. Glad you liked the beef curry recipe.

@Yvonne
Yvonne. Glad that you like the beef curry recipe.
the best curry ever
Thanks for your feedback Heidi
Sorry but I really didn’t like this curry; I can’t understand why there are so many positive comments and so few with anything slightly negative? Surely I can’t be the only one who doesn’t like it.
Hi. What was it about the curry you didn’t like? How do you think it could be improved? DavidB
Hello David I am new to slow cooker cooking want to try ur recipe but bit confused on instructions u say roll beef in the flour mix then brown all side then stir in remaining flour to where the beef in the pan or slow cooker sorry if daft question thanks Matt
Hi Matt. Yes, you roll the beef chuncks in the flour and spices and then fry them in a frying pan for about 2 minutes until browned. Then you transfer the beef into the slow cooker and follow the rest of the recipe. Hope that helps.
Just made this and put into my slow cooker which I don’t use enough, to be honest. I liked this recipe as I had everything I needed in my cupboard and didn’t have to go out to buy fresh chillies or ginger (left cashews out as not keen). I also added mushrooms and some cauliflower florets to the recipe, and used a tblspn of Branson pickle instead of the sultanas!
Thanks for your comments Jenny. Glad you liked the recipe. It’s a great idea to add and change ingredients, and change things to your taste or whatever is in your fridge !
Great curry. I will do this again.
Thanks for your comment Richard.
Just made this and its fab! Thanks for recipe!
